Viking Workshop - February 2025

This half term Year 4 have been learning about the Vikings in History. We have learned about life in a Viking village and types of jobs people had, the Viking raids of Britain and the Danegeld tax as well as the relationship with the Anglo-Saxons. We have learned about the Viking runes and jewellery and produced some beautiful artefacts.

In English we have read about Norse mythology, Viking gods and their view of the world with our class text Arthur and the Golden Rope and various non-fiction texts. We created our own heroes to go on a quest and mythological creatures and wrote our own Norse myths.

On Monday we were transported back to May 878 AD, leading up to the Battle of Edington for our visiting workshop! We were excited to dress up as Viking villagers and learn some crafts and professions, such as Rune-Casting, Weaving, Scribing, Pottery, Metal-Working and Candle Making.

On Monday 10th February we had our Viking Workshop. The whole class looked amazing in their costumes. The first thing we did was to get stickers and write our Viking names on them. When we first went into the hall it was dark as the only light was from little lanterns on each table. We were all so excited! But our excitement dropped to fear as we saw a show appear at the door! The figure then opened the door - it was a man wearing a funny little white robe and he told us that we were now part of a Viking tribe. In the morning there were eight different tables and we did five crafts. We made a candle, a scary elf face (that was supposed to keep away the Saxons), a mould for a necklace and we made ink and then wrote a letter with it. We also made Runes out of clay and a little bag for them. We then tried weaving and finally we made some horrible smelling medicines. The morning was my favourite part but in the afternoon we did fake archery and we also tried to make a formation with shields. The man chose two clay necklace moulds to actually make into a necklace - and HE CHOSE MINE! While he was doing that he also showed us a bit of fossilised poo! The Viking workshop was the best!

On Monday 10th February we did a Viking Workshop. We made a candle, pots, ink and medicines. My Viking name was Cort the Courageous! We then had a Viking fight but the adults won and we lost. We had a tray with dirt and we found a rib-cage bone, a spine bone and a cone in it! I had a really great time!

On Monday 10th February we had our Viking Workshop. There were different stations with unique things like making candles with bee water, pretending to be sick and getting a cure and making ink with lumpy powder and water. My favourite activity was making a candle with the wax and getting our Viking names. My Viking name was Jorvik the Amazing! Between break and lunch we had to catch some food and see where the Saxons were - we carried on until lunchtime where we had to talk about reasons to invade Britain.

Museum of Power - November 2024

On Friday last week Year 4 went to the Museum of Power in Langford to learn all about water and the water cycle. We had a fantastic day; the children made water filters, water wheels ( and tested them out with a water gun!) visited Astaria the fairy garden and watched some amazing experiments. We explored all the machines in the Engine hall and used the displays to find out facts about water and how it is treated in our area. The children showed exemplary behaviour and had a great learning experience.
