Soundbath Workshop - Children's Mental Health Week 2025

As part of Children's Mental Health Week Year 3 participated in a Soundbath Workshop. The instructors used sound bowls, rainmakers, chimes etc. to make sounds which the children laid on the mats and listened to.  The idea was to promote mindfulness, being calm and chilled. It was a very interesting experience - some of the children loved it and said they'd try it again while others found it a bit uncomfortable! But we all agreed that finding ways to be more mindful and calm was a good idea!

Mummifying Tomatoes - January 2025

Year 3 children have been learning about Ancient Egypt during their history lessons this term. They have really enjoyed finding out how Egyptians lived and what they believed in. As part of the topic, they have learnt about the process of mummification. Ancient Egyptians used this method to preserve bodies so that the person could pass over into the afterlife. We wanted to try it out but, as we were unable to find any dead bodies, we decided to mummify tomatoes instead.

The children really enjoyed a practical lesson in which we carried out the process from start to finish, from cutting open the body (tomato), pulling out the organs (seeds) and filling it with natron (salt and bicarbonate of soda) to preserve it. In about 40 days, we will have another look at our tomatoes to see if they have been mummified. After this lesson, we used our expertise to write a set of instructions so that other people could have a go at mummifying tomatoes. Feel free to use our instructions to try it at home!

This has been a really enjoyable topic for year 3 and it has been lovely to see how engaged and interested they are in learning about this ancient civilisation.
