Year 2
Great Fire of London Workshop - February 2025
This half term Year 2 explored the significant events of the Great Fire of London. Our young historians have shown great enthusiasm while learning about life in 1666. To bring our learning to life we participated in a workshop led by 'History off the Page' where pupils had the opportunity to become candle makers, seamstress/tailors, weavers, perfumers and leather workers. The children behaved impeccably and looked fantastic in their costumes.
Throughout this topic, Year 2 have demonstrated such an impressive recall of facts – did you know Samuel Pepys buried his parmesan cheese to keep it safe? We have loved learning new facts through our weekly guided reading sessions and we are working hard to memorise a poem called ‘The Hungry Fire.’ During Art lessons, the children created striking silhouette artworks of the London skyline using chalks and black paper. The children carefully selected the colours they wanted and used techniques to create their background. The children are extremely proud of their work.
It has been amazing to see the excitement and passion for learning in our classroom, and we look forward our new topic after half term! Here are some comments from the children in Year 2:
I enjoyed making the leather bookmarks as we used a hammer and tools!
My favourite activity was designing a clay pot as I made patterns inside.
Children's Mental Health Week 2025
Year 2 read the book 'Giraffes Can't Dance,' it's a story where Gerald is finally able to dance to his own tune when he gets some encouraging words from an unlikely friend. The children came up with such fantastic ideas of how long they could help and encourage others-amazing work Year 2!
Hanningfield Reservoir - November 2024
Thank you for visiting us with your class yesterday for your class visit to Hanningfield! Despite it being cold and morale being lower than normal from myself, your class thoroughly cheered us with their enthusiasm and politeness! In the end, it was a great day spent wrapped up in all our layers, bird spotting and having delightful encounters with a resident robin and Jay! All EWT staff and volunteers who helped, commented on what a great class they were and how engaged both students and teachers/helpers all were - this always helps us and gives more opportunity to spend with the students sharing our knowledge, so thank you to all who helped on the day too!
